How strong is AES 256 encryption?

On a drama TV show, it was shown that a file stored on disk with 256 bit AES encryption was broken on the fly using a laptop. It got me thinking, is it really possible to do that? If all that is required to break an encryption is to know the pword, does it really matter, which encryption algorithm is used? Any pword cracking program should do the job. Just wondering ....
